Frogball was a short lived band from Bellingham, MA/Worcester, MA. They played stupid as fuck pop punk with a lot of hardcore influence. Frogball has very short songs about smelling bad, wanting nachos, being lazy, hanging out, and drinking. Stuff I can totally get behind. The songs are catchy, fun, and great to sing along to. They are definitely one of my favorites ever to come from MA and possibly one of my favorite bands ever. "Fuck" may be one of the best songs ever written as it has withstood the very rigorous test of being listened to upwards from 72 times in a row, while screaming every word, drinking multiple 40oz's, and putting holes in an apartment ceiling while fist pumping. Sounds as fresh and good as it ever did. This release contains ALMOST everything the band did. The name of the album, and the first three songs, are quotes from the best movie ever Dirty Work, directed by Bob Saget and starring Norm MacDonald. If you haven't seen it, what are you stupid? However, this is the SECOND best album about Dirty Work, the first being some bullshit from some bullshit Canadian band. Anyways, I'm rambling here. Just listen to this and fall in love. FFO: Dolarhyde, TKC, Kill Conrad, Screeching Weasel, Angry Samoans, Descendents, Beavis and Butthead, Nu-Metal

Go Sailor were an indie-pop/twee band on Lookout! Records in the late '90s. They share members from the awesome Tiger Trap, who sound pretty similar. They also shared members with Crimpshrine, The Softies, and Henry's Dress. This is adorable girl fronted pop at it's best. SO CATCHY. Really light sounding guitars and fast drumming make it really poppy. REALLY POPPY. Awesome riffs and tons of hooks. It makes you just wanna dance! The lady from this band also has a wonderful voice. "Together Forever in Love" is my JAM. They have recently started playing some shows again, although I'm not sure if it's going to be a full time deal. They are playing in NYC May 19th at the NYC POPFEST. Soooo if you're in the area check out a band that will probably never play again! FFO: Tiger Trap, Talulah Gosh, Cub, Lemuria, Vivian Girls

I don't really know what to say about Dillinger Four that hasn't already been said. If you're checking out this blog you should probably already know this band. D4 are from Minneapolis, MN and play gruff, raw, and fast pop-punk. They play a style that has been aped and poorly imitated by hundreds of bands of recent memory, but this is the original and the real deal. I love the dual vocals, switching between melodies and aggression. The music is the same way; nice melodies and fast aggressive punk. The lyrics are very tongue in cheek and satirize modern society and government. Y'know, and pop punk stuff like being poor and lonely. This is their first release, as far as I can tell, and its definitely a good one. This stuff is on the "This Shit is Genius" LP that collects their splits and 7" so you may already have this, but whatever. It's still great. The band is still around from time to time, and put out the wonderful "C I V I L W A R" in 2008. Members play in a couple other bands, but Paddy plays in The Arrivals, who you should definitely check out, and Cleveland Bound Death Sentence, who shares members of Crimpshrine! FULL CIRCLE! Crimpshrine was a band from the Berkeley, CA area in the late '80s/early '90s that was hugely influential on bands in the area and in punk rock in general. Members went on to form/play in bands such as Pinhead Gunpowder, Fifteen, Tilt, Sweet Baby, Astrid Oto, Cleveland Bound Death Sentence, Thorns of Life, and even Screeching Weasel. Aaron Cometbus, the drummer, has been in a billion bands since Crimpshrine and publishes the amazing Cometbus zine, still to this day, tracking his adventures over the years. The band was hugely influential on giants and contemporaries such as Green Day and Operation Ivy. Their sound is very uniquely their own and modern bands such as The Credentials, Witches With Dicks, Chinese Telephones, Shang-a-Lang, among others, owe their entire existence to this band. Needless to say this is an important band and this is an important record. Messy, raw, punk sounding pop-punk. Calling it pop-punk would be wrong I think however. OH BOY! Plow United (formerly Plow as detailed in a pretty funny cease and desist included in the 12") are one of my favorite bands. Hailing from Wilmington, Delaware (we're in Delaware...) Plow United played fast, balls to the wall poppy punk with lots of hardcore influence. They sound a bit like 90's Screeching Weasel-y punk with way more early Descendents influence and some Lifetime thrown in if that helps paint a picture. They called it "Thrash Pop" which is fairly accurate I'd say. Anways, you should definitely check it out and if you like it go find their other stuff. This is definitely the best though. The S/T record is fucking amazing from start to finish and "Spindle" is probably the best song ever. New Jersey hardcore band Tear it Up shamelessly lifted the "if I could treat you like shit then you'd love me forever" line from that song. The songs on the split are also good, but slower. "Reason" is on both and you can definitely see they got tighter and faster between the time period these came out. I included the Tall Man songs in this download too. Tall Man were from WC and play a sort of Minutemen style punk with a lady singer. Definitely worth checking out. FFO: Descendents, Weston, Lifetime, Bouncing Souls, Tear it Up

Here we have four, count 'em, FOUR 45s from one of New Hampshire's best and most underrated bands, SINKHOLE. Sinkhole came from the also great, A.G.'s from Newmarket area, NH and members went on to form Doc Hopper and The Groucho Marxists, played in The Measure [SA], and recorded/produced a bunch of sweet pop-punk albums (like The Ergs!). Sinkhole played really energetic and unique sounding pop-punk. Hugely influential in bands like The Ergs! and Billy Raygun, who have both totally ripped them off (whether they know it or not). So with that said you should have a slight idea of what they sound like. Stool is a real early recording for the band. I'm not huge on the eponymous song, but "Waterbug" and "Sneeze" are both fucking fantastic. Donkey is awesome the whole way through, with diverse songs and great lyrics. Love Ain't Punk is ok, skip the Queers songs and the GG Allin cover. The split with New Breath is really good too, and New Breath themselves aren't bad. He has a new CD out that you can pick up at any number of places if you are interested. Support local musicians. Check out Flyrock Records, located in Dover. They record and put out a ton of local music for fairly cheap and very well done. Also here is a music video for his song "Wasted" in lieu of footage of him performing in studio!

Here is a local death metal band from our area, New Hampshire. This band killed it back when they were still together, fast, technical, and catchy. They had a big following and were getting out there around the country. Sadly they are no more, or at least very lowly active. Check this if you like Suffocation, Morbid Angel, or Death. This is old school death metal fans paying homage with their own twist.

I got this demo from their guitar player at the brick house in Dover, NH around 2005. Good sound for a live death metal show, and the dude was one of the nicest people I ever chatted with. Cheers!

This record was sent in to us by the band to review. The Taxpayers are from Portland, OR and play folky-ska-punk with lots of influences from all over the place including bluegrass, swing, blues, and some hardcore. They have about a billion people in the band who play all sorts of instruments on this recording (probably not on tour) including the accordion, mandolin, saxophone, harmonica, and your traditional band instruments.

I'm going to be up front and say this type of music isn't traditionally my cup of tea, but if you enjoy bands like Bomb the Music Industry! or Andrew Jackson Jihad or Fake Problems, you will probably love this. I think it is very successful in capturing that sound that those bands are going for and the lyrics are earnest and intelligent. For me, their sound is too all over the place and somehow still doesn't sound full. That could be an issue with the recording as in their email they informed me it was recorded in a plethora of different places. The album doesn't really flow well, as each song sounds like a contained piece of work. I also think the shorter "in between" songs are fairly unnecessary, despite having good lyrics and fairly interesting melodies. I feel like they are almost unfinished and add a sort of hiccup to the overall feel of the record. This record shows promise however, and a lot of parts and the way the songs are arranged remind me of The World/Inferno Friendship Society (a favorite of mine). I think this album is missing the great poppy hooks and melodies that the World/Inferno records have or AJJ has on his records. I really enjoy how ambitious this album is and they definitely have an aesthetic they are going for and achieving. The song "Geodesic Prison Song" sounds like a Blatz song almost, which rules. Other standout tracks are: "And the Damn Thing Bit Him!" and "Everybody Just Stood There" and "Cold Front." The singer's voice is great, but I can't help draw comparisons to both Bomb the Music Industry! and Fake Problems, which could be a compliment or a detractor based on your opinions of those bands. Anyways, I bet this band is raucous and full of energy live and tons of fun. Especially if they do end up going out with a ton of people playing for them.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a fine record for what it is, but I think they need some work if they want to rise above a sub genre and start making unique and truly great music. Despite what I may think, they put a lot of heart and soul into this release and it definitely shows and is absolutely worth a listen. FFO: Bomb the Music Industry! Tragedy - Vengeance (2002)

This post is to meant to take a break in the black metal uploading I have been doing, (more to come!). This is tragedy a band who is playing Maryland Death Fest, with a shitload of other awesome bands including Buzzoven! Tragedy formed from the ashes of His Hero Is Gone and multiple other current punk bands. This isn't far removed from the intensity of His Hero Is Gone but does push the envelope in structure and song writing. This is their third release and is my personal favorite.
The lyrics are actually well thought out and intelligent usually containing references for those interested in the inserts of their records, so follow up! The music is fantastic fast and exhilarating for those who haven't heard it. Don't miss out on this if you enjoy metal, punk, or the d-beat. After tragedy became a current seminal band many bands began to copy the sound of these records which some refer to as the t-beat, give it a shot you won't be disappointed!

I KNOW HOT DOGS TASTE GOOD! Egghead was a really dorky pop-punk band from the mid '90s from New York. Listening to them, you can definitely see where bands like The Ergs! and the Steinways picked up a lot of influence. They definitely aren't the same in sound, but certain elements are very apparent in both like the singing and the dorky/lovey dovey lyrics. This record shares more in common with like, The Dead Milkmen or The Angry Samoans maybe. Its fairly slow for pop-punk, mid paced tempo maybe, with Jet Pack being an exception. Lyrical subjects range from a love song about the local palmreader to praising the exploits of a Japanese superhero team. Egghead is a band more newer pop-punk dudes should be aware of, and this is definitely a fun and catchy album that is worth a listen. FFO: The Dead Milkmen, Stiff Little Fingers, Boris the Sprinkler, Angry Samoans, The Ergs!, Screeching Weasel.

This is a little off the beaten path for myself, but my love for mike patton leads me into some strange music sometimes. This record was made after the DEP's original singer left as a side project of the band. I believe they even did a small tour with patton after this was released. This record is short but sweet, all the songs are fantastic. The last song is a cover of Aphex Twin 'come to daddy', now if you have heard aphex twin you would wonder how this is possible? The fact that the band and patton perform the song flawlessly should speak volumes about this record. Hate it if you want, this is one of my personal all time favorite ep's.

This is an interesting record that I never see mentioned anywhere. Crossed Eyes were a band from Raleigh, North Carolina and had members from another band with an awesome name called Street Sharks. They play a mish mash of all sorts of punk sub genres. They generally stay around the fuzzy power pop punk kind of stuff that the Marked Men play but totally have audible influences from all over the place including British power pop and '77 punk, hardcore, and real poppy pop punk. I saw them at a fest one year and was totally impressed. I think they are broken up now, but the members all have new things that you should check out if you like this. Sorry State Records has a bunch of links to said bands. I also think this may be their only release, besides maybe some comp tracks, which is a real shame because this band is pretty fantastic. Another installment of the second wave of black metal. I suppose I can explain why I am putting up black metal. The black twilight circle of L.A. is putting out some fantastic music right now which brings me back to my high school days of listening to a shit load of black metal and smoking pot until I passed out. I have my good friend Kevin to thank for all the introductions to Mayhem, Immortal, DarkThrone, Emperor, and Minor Threat without these bands I would still be the same piece of shit I am today, just with out the hobby of playing and collecting music.
But, I digress. This is my third favorite album, I can't find Pure Holocaust which means my brother has it. This album is a bit more put together than DFMM, but it is relentless. It comes with another cheesy video, but don't let that discourage you.

Immortal - Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism (1992)

This album is from the infamous second wave of black metal hailing from Norway. Immortal was a fantastic raw stripped down black metal band when they began slowly transforming into bullshit arena black metal rock which they now put out. This album and Pure Holocaust are my two favorite immortal albums, and yes this is the album where the video of the corpse painted which hat wearing member runs around the woods and poses with swords but don't let that discourage you! The hideous and repetitive new wave of hipster and punk black metal would be no where without the wonderful second wave of black metal. I will be uploading a select few of my favorites over the next few months.

Now to the album itself. This is the fusion of thrash and black metal that defined the genre, my personal favorite type. I personally try to avoid the bands consisting of consistent blasting and tremolo picking. The drums are a bit sloppy, but if you like punk you know that can add to an album. This is a great winter listening album get nice and cold, turn the heat off, get a buzz on and some satanic rituals!!!

This is a really fun record! Squirtgun were an early/mid 90's pop-punk band on Lookout Records from Indiana. If you are at all vaguely familiar with the Lookout discography, you can pretty much guess what this band sounds like. If you are listening to this and you start to think, "Hey, Cat Party, I think I've heard this song before!" ITS BECAUSE YOU PROBABLY HAVE! The song Social is famously the intro music to the relatively unsuccessful Mallrats by Kevin Smith! WOW! Apparently Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day, duh) personally recommended this band to the music advisor working on the film. Way to go Billy! Anyways, Squirtgun play straightforward 90's poppy pop-punk. Lighthearted and fun songs about girls and not fitting in, par for the course when it comes to pop-punk. This is a solid pop punk record. Social is totally a standout track, as is Almost the Girl and they coincidentally have awesome bass intros. Frederick's Frost is faster, but has a dumb ska part in it which almost ruins the song. ALMOST. FFO: Green Day, Screeching Weasel, The Queers, Pop-Punk.

TOP 10 of 2010!

We were supposed to unveil these on the radio show last week, but we were locked out! I figured I'd post it up before it got too late for it to be relevant. This is gonna be a huge post. Links are included where possible, just click the band name/album name. I'm not going to upload them because I'm lazy and I'd feel shitty doing that to all these new releases from, generally, upcoming bands. Ask me if you really can't figure out google.

TOM'S TOP 10 LPs of 2010:

10. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Now, don't lose me already here. I wouldn't normally choose a soundtrack for best album of the year material, but honestly, I listened to this more times than other records on this list. It's fantastic. A great mix of garage and indie rock music from the past to the present. Whoever selected the songs for this soundtrack has great taste. The perfectly catchy 90's alt-music eponymous track by Plumtree, the dreamy folky country-ish Beachwood Sparks, the best Broken Social Scene song I've ever heard, and one of my favorite Rolling Stones songs, along with the great Black Lips, T. Rex, and Frank Black tracks make for a wonderfully accurate theme for this dreamy, nerdy, rocky movie. However, what really stands out are the original songs created for the fictitious Sex Bob-Omb, Crash and the Boys, and the Metric track donated for The Clash at Demonhead (which is by far the best Metric song I've heard). Beck created the perfect garage rock Sex Bob-Omb songs and Broken Social Scene did the amazingly abrupt Crash songs. Seriously, We Hate You, Please Die by Crash and the Boys is one of my favorite songs ever. Check it out if you like any of the aforementioned bands or really if you like rock and roll in general. Also, watch the movie and read the comics if you want a really fun and unique story. I'm a fanboy, whatever. Standout tracks: We Hate You, Please Die, Threshold, Garbage Truck, and Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl.

9. The Measure [SA] - Notes

The latest release from the New Brunswick based pop-punkers is more of the same, but that doesn't mean anything bad. With every release they become more and more confident and organic with their music. Lauren's voice could be off putting to new listeners, but I think they're filled with soul and personality. Fid's vocals are also good, but I could do without the distortion over them in some of the tracks in favor of a realistic sound that he does on others. Their instrumentation is frenetic and strong, and listening to their records feels like a live show almost. The best part are the lyrics. Ranging from wonderfully honest and frank personal journal entries to criticisms of society, politics, friends, enemies, and punks they really reflect the individuality of the band. I don't think The Measure really sounds like any other band playing poppy punk stuff so it's hard to compare them, but if you like stuff like The Ergs! or For Science or anything else from New Brunswick, chances are you'll like The Measure. Standout tracks: Be Yours, Unwritten, Fear of Commitment, and Criticism.

8. Nobunny - First Blood

Nobunny gets production value! Straying away from the lo-fi stylings and drum machines of Love Visions, Nobunny offers a selection of great sounding weirdo rock and roll tunes. His influences range from all over the rock spectrum, and his sound is mostly a doo-wop, bubblegum, and 50's pop with a grungier and rough edge. With lyrics ranging from masturbation anthems to lamenting the Bozo the Clown show, its safe to say this is a fun album. The fast pianos on (Do the) Fuck Yourself, the Velvet Undergound inspired Blow Dumb, slow and moody Breathe and Pretty Please Me, and the bubblegummy Pretty Little Trouble show Nobunny's versatility and absolute love for 50s-70s popular rock music. That's really all this is, a love note to the beginnings of rock and roll from a humble dude wearing a bunny mask. Standout tracks: Ain't it a Shame, Blow Dumb, Live it Up, and Motorhead With Me (which is a re-released older Nobunny song).

7. The Credentials - Routines

The Credentials are a fast pop-punk band from Boston. This is their first release, recorded all in one take with vocals added in after, and it is a doozy. It's relentless and intelligent, which is usually fairly rare within this genre. Their lyrics are very honest and probably as existential as a punk band can get. Self loathing, loss of identity, not having the answers, but knowing everyone else are the fucked up ones seems to be the driving motivators behind the songs. The guitars and drums are fast and agressive, but poppy enough to keep this in the realm of pop-punk. It's pop punk with emphasis on the punk. Apparently some people have a problem with with recording, which I don't see at all. It's raw and real sounding and perfect for this band. The title Routines comes from the same named song which says "Routines give us comfort, Routines keep us down" is a beautiful sentiment and kinda sums up everything about this band. If you like Crimpshrine, Screeching Weasel, or stuff like that you will probably like this. Standout tracks: Nice Girl/Coffee Shop, Slowly Going the Way of the Juggalo, Night Sweats, and Korean Porn Dumpster.

6. Sonic Avenues - Sonic Avenues

The Sonic Avenues play powerpop with a bit more of a pop-punk or a garage feel to it. I can't quite decide. Alls I know is they sound very similar to The Exploding Hearts. Maybe just the vocals because the guitars are a bit fuzzier than the Hearts'. Regardless, this record is great especially if you are into that sort of thing. Ten tracks of Canadian lovesick anthems for your ears. This is a really fun and catchy album, and I find myself humming the hooks over and over again while I'm at work. The guitars are jangly, like I like 'em and the drums are interesting enough to keep me bouncing through the record. I also enjoy the Sedatives-esque keys/organs in some of the songs. There's really not technically too much to this album, but that's totally ok. It's simply infectious garage pop songs done really really well. Standout tracks: I Want You Now, Girls With Pearls, Bleed Me Dry, and Why Can't I (Stop Thinking 'bout You)

5. The White Wires - WWII

The White Wires, also from Canada, are one of my favorite bands I've discovered this year. I picked up their first LP at Insub Fest this year after hearing a couple songs from it and I was hooked. I've been anticipating this release all year, and although I don't think its as good as their first LP, and frankly I think they're seven inches are their best material, this is still an awesome record. White Wires play bubblegum garage pop, really straightforward and really fun. All the songs have pretty rudimentary (but fun) lyrics about girls and beaches and whatnot, but that's to be expected with this sort of style. The singers voice has definitely improved since their first LP and the guitars sort of have a surfier vibe to them too, which I love. Most of the songs are slow and dancy, but there are some quick pogo inducing ragers on here too. The production on this record is a bit better than their first, but still doesn't lose that gritty lo-fi feel that people either love or hate. If you are an audiophile, get over it and start singing along! This band obviously loves things like Buddha Records, and if you like music in that vain, you should definitely check this out. Standout tracks: Roxanne, I Can Tell, Hands, and Are You Mad

4. The Young Leaves - Life Underneath

I wrote about The Young Leaves in my last post, so I'm probably going to reiterate some things here. I just picked up the vinyl copy of this record and it sounds sooooo much more FULL and perfect. I really hope this band gets some recognition, because this music is too good to let go unnoticed. They could have easily toured with Pavement or Superchunk or Archer's of Loaf or something back in the 90's. Simon's drumming is incredible, only to be outdone by himself when they play live. He is all over the kit, and so precise. Great fills, and so much additional drum work really help this kind of music which could easily settle for basic drum beats. It gives it a whole new energy, almost like a punk record. Christopher's guitars are vicious at times and beautiful and serene other times. They kind of remind me of Husker Du. Pete's backup vocals add an extra punch to a lot of the songs, and his bass playing is top notch. Songs like Boot to the Face, Hey Man (Backup Plan), and Life Underneath have an almost metal element to parts of them, and songs like Sleepyhead, Ugly Line, and Call Me Call are just the opposite. It all totally works and flows nicely, sounding like a cohesive, well planned piece of work. To top it all off, everything is recorded and mixed by Christopher in his parent's basement and it sounds professional and perfect for the music. Get this record dummy. Standout tracks: Boot to the Face, Call Me Cal, Life Underneath, and Sleepyhead.

3. Black Wine - Black Wine

Black Wine is another band on my list playing 90's alternative music revival, but with a grungier direction. This band is members from Hunchback, Full of Fancy, and the almighty Ergs! The members wear their influences on their sleeves, but really make this record something uniquely theirs. It almost seems like a culmination of all their favorite bands and all the music they made before this record. At base level its similar in style to Dinosaur Jr, or Nirvana, or the Melvins, but poppier than all of those bands. The song Haunted is a total pop song, but fits in so naturally with the rest of the songs. All three band members sing, and compliment each other wonderfully. Miranda's vocals are definitely my favorite however, and she almost summons a harmonious Kathleen Hanna. The lyrics deal with dreams and bizarre imagery, and what seems like a lot of nostalgia and longing. The guitar work is intricate and catchy while being heavy and grungy. The drums are poppy and dark. The bass is smooth and crazy good. And goddamn the end of Belong gives me shivers. This record came out in the first month of the year and it's managed to sound fresh and interesting to me 12 months later. If that's not a sign of a good record, I don't know what is. Standout tracks: Haunted, Couch Critics, Chateuau of Ghosts, and Belong.

2. Masshysteri - Masshysteri

I fucking love this band. Masshysteri is from Umea, Sweden, features most of the members from The Vicious, and plays awesome melodic 70's inspired punk. Take some X or Avengers songs, take some Wipers songs, throw in more harmonies and some surf, then play it faster, and you have this record. The bass is my favorite part. It's just so...groovy? That's a stupid word to use. The guitars have a jangly, garage-y style to them, but the music is fast paced and punk as fugg. The dual vocals work so perfectly here, which is a rarity. This is definitely their best release, and the only downside is I have no idea what I'm saying when I sing along. Standout tracks: Dom Kan Inte Höra Musiken, Välkommen Till Verkligheten, Satans Barn, and Spökstad.

1. The Men - Immaculada

Holy shit, what a record. The Men are a hardcore band at heart, but play almost every genre on this record. They have a noise song, a shoegaze song, a pop punk song, a sludge song, and a black metal song. All of this is definitely tinged with a hardcore band's style, and it works so perfectly. I don't even know how! If you told me that before I heard this I'd think you were stupid! This record is dreamy, moody, and atmospheric while still keeping you grounded and on your toes, ready for whatever is coming next. High energy, and very intelligent. This band can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned, because they've proved themselves with this masterpiece. I can listen to this a million times and not get bored. I really have nothing else to say. Get this, and enjoy. The album title says it all. Standout tracks: It really needs to be listened to as a whole I think, but anyways, Grave Desecration, Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition, Oh Yoko, and Immaculada

Garagey Ramones worshippers who sing about pizza and beer. This song and the b-side "Cool 2 Drive" are perfect.

Not sure if this came out in 2010, but I don't care. Unique pop punk band from Mass. Like if Latterman was good and was super into Comadre.

The Young Leaves are a band from Central/Westernish MA that play '90s influenced indie rock...I guess. They totally sound like something in the vain of Dinosaur Jr., Archers of Loaf, Superchunk, etc but have a really unique and fresh feel to it. These songs definitely aren't rehashed versions of these other bands, but there is a lot of love for '90s indie rock. This is one of my favorite records that came out this year. Favorite tracks include: Boot to the Face, Call me Cal, Life Underneath, and Basement Song. Life Underneath is their second full length, and they are releasing it on vinyl VERY shortly. In fact, their record release is tomorrow evening in Dover at Slaughterhouse 5. Check it:

Carcinogen - Demo (1992)

As promised here is the Carcinogen demo. This is Dystopia before they were Dystopia, so I hope you enjoyed that post. This is the foundation on which Dystopia built their unique sound, but differs in the fact that it leans more towards punk influenced death metal. This is awesome I mean really awesome, perfect crossover between punk and heavy metal for sure and done in a much different way than you are thinking when reading crossover, no element of DRI exists in this recording. The sound could be a little better and I am embarssed that it is not my own copy of the material, but I feel as though if anyone did appreciate the Dystopia post this will be appreciated just as much. Anyway get your pile of drugs that you bought with your christmas money and the six pack your friend left because he had to get away from his parents right after he//she opened their gifts sit back and listen to some tunes!

I'm bending the rules a little bit here, but its crust-mas so who cares! This is the final chapter in the outfit of Dystopia's releases and it is nothing short of killer. Heavy down-tuned anthems of being depraved, drug addled, and miserable. These themes are not the only negativity embodied throw in hatred for EVERYONE and all technology and you have yourself a top-notch album. If you know this band you know what your getting yourself into heavy, down-tuned flowing sludge/punk. The Closet Fairies were a pop-punk band with garage-y influences from Boston, MA. They shared members with seminal MA pop-punk outfit Witches With Dicks along with The Serious Geniuses, Brain Killer, The Lazardos, and currently The Maine Coons. This band never had a proper full length, which is quite a shame because this stuff is fantastic. My favorite of these three 7" is the Ghetto Girls one. Man, that song is amazing. Also the B side has a great, ripping secret track on it. Popular Science is the brand new, posthumous release from Shock to the System, and definitely worth picking up as it is among their best work. Certainly more garage-y then their other stuff, in a very good way. This band also has a track on a Dangerous Intersections comp, an AOTU single, and a tape demo, and if you want to sell me them or know of any other things they've released let me know. I got to see this band once (with The Ergs! and For Science even!!) and then they broke up shortly after. Check this stuff out if you've never heard them, because you will like it. Backstabbers Incorporated - Kamikaze Missions

Backstabbers Inc. is a local band from NH, where the writers of this blog hail from. I'm not sure how many people know about this band (hopefully alot) but they mix genre's like its their fucking job and with this album it comes to their high point. After this album and a couple tours the singer took off to join a former guitarist of BSI in Trap Them who I'm sure plenty of people know about also, the drummer for this session left after the recording to join Unearth, The Red Chord and plenty of other bands. But, enough about the history. This album RIPS from start to finish and engages the listener the whole time. I actually don't have the first track anymore (due to a this CD rip being old, and lending my brother the CD and it being ruined) luckily it was just some ambiance which did in fact add to the album so my apologies! I have a recent interview with the guitarist lying around somewhere that I will upload. The band is still together and consists of the two brothers who play guitar and sing, Nick(waranimal) on bass, and Jonah (ALWLWAD, Ramming Speed) on drums. This is a fantastic combination of crust, grind, and punk which does not disappoint. If anyone is interested in anymore albums I have a few kicking around that I could upload after (just comment!)

I got to see their "last" show in Boston which had almost every ex-member present and it was one of my favorite shows of all time, they still rip today especially with their drummer who is phenomenal! And I guess they have a new album coming out in the future? The video below is a new song.

Dr. Dooom - First Come First Served

Dr. Dooom is a moniker of Kool Keith the rapper who got his start with the Ultra-Magnetic Mc's who wrote some of the best underground hip hop in the mid 80's. Keith went on from this band do his solo career starting with Kool Keith and then branching off to Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, and Nogatco Rd. He intertwines all of these personalities on his albums. This is his first album as Dr. Dooom and as much as I hate genre's i believe this embodies the Horrorcore hip hop tag. Rumor is that Dr. Octagon is his persona when he smokes PCP and writes his material, there is defiantly some drug use going on in this album due to the level of bizarreness in the lyrics, beats, and overall theme and flow of the album. The first five track are the stand outs of the album, while Apartment 223 is the best track for sure. Check this out even if you don't listen to hip-hop it might be right up your alley!

Population Reduction - At The Throats Of Man Forever

Here is Population Reduction a grind band from San Francisco, CA. This band has been gaining popularity as of late, getting added to a few festivals every now and than. If you like early Napalm Death, Terrorizer, or Nasum give these guys a shot. This was the seven inch they put out before their LP "Each Birth A New Disaster" which KILLS and is still available through Tank Crimes so if you like this and want more of their material buy that because it blows this out of the water. That being said here we have At The Throats Of Man Forever the bands first 7" after their self released CD-R Demo. Ripping grind with good lyrics about weed and killing hipsters (it beats thrash about pizza and beer bongs!) If anyone is interested I have this on CD with a live radio set, the demo, and comp tracks so if you like this and want more LEAVE A COMMENT. Other than that pack up a bongload and put on some raging grind!!
I also got to see these guys in SF for a benefit show that the Capitalist Casualties dropped from and, they killed it for sure. Funny mother fuckers for sure and they make a lot of noise live for only being a two-piece!

The Kung-Fu Monkeys (not to be confused with LOS Kung-Fun Monkeys, a ska band) are a surfy bubblegum pop-punk band from New York. They sound like a Beach Boys/Buddy Holly split played at 45 rpm. It's awesome. Fun, bubbly, surf pop that just makes you feel good. This burned CD, limited to 20 copies, is a bunch of demos and rare cuts that I believe are generally from their upcoming full-length. These songs are really stripped down versions of what The KFM usually play, but are still really awesome. Standout tracks for me are Persephone, Please and Disappearing Rose. These songs aren't as surfy as typical of this band, and are more like a poppier and less psychedelic The Zombies. Oh, also, they cover ABBA. Check it out, and if you like it, find the rest of their stuff because its all wonderful. Also, check out The Marshmallows while your at it for another dose of cavity inducing pop along the same lines. This 7" was released on the White Wires/Mean Jeans Euro tour this year from the German record label Ptrash. Each side consists of one band covering a song from the other band. The Mean Jeans version of the White Wires song "I Remember How" is far superior to the White Wires "Born On a Saturday Night" but both covers are neat. Both these bands are two of my favorites playing music currently and you should totally check it out. Great garage-y Ramones inspired punk rock. Iron Monkey - Our Problem

Iron Monkey is a killer UK sludge band with a disappointingly short catalog. This is some of the heaviest sludge and roll around. The only two LP's I know of consist of this one and their self-titled(if you know of or have anymore material drop me a line!). The vocals are a bit on the hardcore side but, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Their releases were extremely hard to find for a while until Earache re-issued a double CD with both of their LP's on it. If you like drugs, sludge, or punching your steering wheel while driving CHECK THIS OUT. This sounds like smoking weed out a of a skull with eyehategod in a dumpster while shooting dope with buzzoven and having the melvins do lines angel dust off a Black Sabbath LP in a dirty back alley behind a dive bar.

Cheeky was a FANTASTIC poppy-punk band with rock 'n roll influences from Brooklyn, NY. They combined really snotty/goofy vocals with sweet riffs and fun, well written songs. They almost have a riot grrl feel to them, but way poppier and fun. The songs all seem to be fairly negative and insulting, which is great against the happy sounding backdrop. Real sarcastic sounding. This record has a lot of attitude. My favorite track(s) on this short but sweet record is the two-parter, Is This Normal?/This is Not Normal. I think the drummer does a lot of the back-ups and they compliment Kate's, the singer, lead vocals well. I only got to see this band once, and I hadn't heard any of their material. They blew me away but broke up shortly after I saw them. They were so goofy and awkward in between songs, then just started shredding and looked like they were having the time of their lives. Members from this band are in the excellent rock 'n roll band BIG EYES, and the 90's influenced BIG SODA now. Also, Kate was in the Replacements-esque USED KIDS, who are certainly also worth checking out. FFO: Angry Samoans, Bikini Kill, Descendents, Replacements

Their awesomely great 7" CHOKE ON A CHEESEBURGER is up for download off of the Quote Unquote Records website, and is HIGHLY recommended. The song writing isn't as good as this record, but the songs are more fun and possibly more classic. YOU NAMBY PAMBY!

ASRA is a little known grind band from NY. I found out about them due to their tour with Gridlink a couple years back. I saw them in MA and they were just as intense as this recorded material. They are far more than just a grind band they are a fantastic combination of sludge, grind, power-violence, and metal. You can hear the obvious cues they take from their influences Discordance Axis, Crossed Out, Assuck, and Brutal Truth. Check this out if grind is your jam, if not still give it a shot it will not bore you. Unfortunatly right after their mini-tour with Gridlink the band broke up, and all that is left is their recorded material.

The Maine Coons are a two piece pop-garage-punk band from Boston. They share members of the fantastic Closet Fairies, also from Boston. This record is on a 7" flexi disc, which is a little ridiculous but kind of neat because it has a limited amount of times you can listen to it before it starts losing sound quality. The drummer plays guitar and sings while an organ player plays along and helps with harmonies. It is very minimal and lo-fi, but works wonderfully. Out of these three songs, I think I like Hey Dickhead the most. It's short and fast and to the point and a ton of fun, like the rest of this record. FFO: Nobunny, King Khan and BBQ, Mark Sultan, The Mummies, Harlem.

Here we have a little known band from Sweden whose style blends d-beat, crust, grind and thrash and brings it to a whole new level. This was a CD put out by sound pollution in either the mid to late nineties or early two thousands. The band went through a complete line-up change in after their first two seven inches. The second line-up change recorded an LP than never saw the light of day but, you can hear some of this songs on this discography. Do not miss this band it is a wonderfully diverse blend of everything the punk world has to offer!

Suicidal Supermarket Trolleys

Here is an album on Profane Existence that seems out of place but, in a good way. Suicidal Supermarket trolleys lean more toward a street punk sound rather than a heavier crust which one would think of when thinking of PE. The sides on this album were recorded at two different years the first being in 93 the second in 95. This record is awesome raw and catchy with snotty vocals the way I like my street punk and I don't particularly care for street punk. They do a great Circle Jerks cover of When The Shit Hits The Fan. I don't know much about the availability of this record due to me finding it locally for 10 bux, but I have seen it in other shops for up to 40 bux.Give this record a shot because it will grow on you for sure and you'll be looking for it before you know it!

Show Review - Vaccine, Punch, Loma Prieta, Bastardswine @ Anchor's Up 11/14

So I thought I'd review a show I went to the other night since this blog is supposed to be all about music promotion. I went and saw Western Massachusetts's heaviest/fastest current band VACCINE along with San Francisco's PUNCH who are on tour with LOMA PRIETA, also from San Francisco. Also on board were locals, BASTARDSWINE, and DRAIZE who unfortunately had to drop. I was bummed out that Draize had to cancel due to a medical issue with their drummer. I was really looking forward to seeing them again after missing their set at the Mob 47 show the other day. Draize has a new record out that you should all go buy.

Bastardswine started the show off right with heavy, Crossed Out influenced powerviolence. They had a pretty huge reaction, which was awesome. It's good to see younger kids into this kind of music along with all the other more popular kinds of hardcore. They were missing their singer, and were a little sloppy because of it, but they still played like crazy. They played a good chunk of songs and ended with what seemed like an unfinished song without vocals.

Loma Prieta was next after a long wait. They played heavier sounding screamo kinda stuff. Like Pageninetynine or something, but with a darker atmosphere. I wasn't really into this band, although they did have great energy. They played a little sloppy and their music was all over the place. They also played a really short set which was kind of awesome.

Punch really surprised me. I enjoyed all the recorded material from them enough, but was really interested to see how they'd be live. Playing fast powerviolence influenced youth crew hardcore, they had a commanding energy and had the entire room moving by the second song. They played a ton of songs off all their records. The singer still had a foot cast on from their last tour, so she wasn't too active, but the rest of the band was jumping all over the place. Great set.

Vaccine closed the show with their brand of heavy powerviolence. Their set was probably about seven minutes long and was just relentless. They are so tight and play so hard. The music sounds exactly like the records live. My only complaint was the singer may have lost his voice, because the vocals sounded off and less intense.

Anchor's Up is a pretty awesome place to see a show, and they have a killer record store above them. You should check in out sometime!

The Marked Men are one of my favorite bands of the last ten years. They play fast garage-y punk rock and roll and are fantastic at it. This record features two songs posthumously released a couple months ago, and recorded last Christmas. Tim Kerr from The Big Boys did the absolutely fantastic artwork. If you've listened to The Marked Men, but not these songs, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR. I don't really have much to say about this band, other then that I think they have no bad songs. Catchy hooks, great melodies, creative songwriting, and somehow it never gets stale. If you like this, check out High Tension Wires, Mind Spiders, and The Potential Johns, which are all other projects by the members of this band. LISTEN TO THIS. The kind fellas from Boston, MA, The New Warden, sent us their new EP entitled Up On Moody. It's a very well recorded burst of Midwestern pop punk inspired punk rock. The New Warden are definitely fans of The Lawrence Arms and Dillinger Four and if you like those bands or any of the recent wave of Midwestern Larry Arms-core (Iron Chic, RVIVR, Dopamines, Copyrights etc) you should LOVE this. They utilize their two singers quite well, although some vocal parts sound a bit goofy. It's all in fun, however, because this EP has so much energy to it. They have fantastic anthem-y parts and harmonies that make me like this kind of punk. I'm not typically to keen on bands like this but I'm liking this. I think they have more fun with this sub genre then a lot of the current bands doing it do. New Warden certainly has a poppier style that certainly takes influence from 90's pop-punk bands like NOFX or later Descendents. They also have a self-aware dorkiness to them reminiscent of the best Weezer songs. Plus, their name is an Arrested Development reference. What's not to like? Disinformation is a definite standout track for me. FFO: Get Bent, Dillinger Four, Lawrence Arms, Dopamines.

Jesu - Opiate Sun

Two decades ago Justin Broadrick was in Napalm Death playing fuzzed out hyper grind for the time. Fast forward to 2009 and he has spearheaded his musical endeavors in a new direction. Godflesh was the precursor to this band (Jesu being the last name of the last track on the last Godflesh album), and this picks up where that last Godflesh album left. If you know Jesu you know the vocals are for the most part clean with droning guitars and electronic noise pulsating through the background. This album is more in the Godflesh direction of organic drums rather than a drum machine and heavy guitar work leaning away from the electronic side with the clean vocals. The only complaint I have about this album is that it is too short. FFO: Godflesh, Sunn O)), Torche, Rwake etc. etc.
